Federal officials intend to declare 19 Indiana counties in violation of a new standard for soot particles that can cause respiratory distress. Local counties on the list are Vanderburgh, Warrick, Dubois, Gibson, Spencer and Knox counties. The EPA says tiny soot particles can lodge in people's lungs and blood vessels and are a major contributor to respiratory problems, especially in children, the elderly and people with existing illnesses.

 

The Roberts Stadium Advisory Board members met one more time for a review of the economic impact analysis prepared by the consulting and planning firm Conventions Sports and Leisure International. Estimated annual revenue from sources including tickets, food, beverage and hotels is $13.7 million compared to $8.1 million in estimated annual revenue the current Roberts Stadium would generate. Mayor Weinzapfel has moved onto the next step of hiring a consultant, architect and financial advisor. Their decision is expected by November.

 

Downtown Evansville Incorporated officials are expected to make an announcement today concerning the future of the Freedom Festival. The details are still being worked out, but it is consistent with speculation that the group Growth Alliance for Greater Evansville will take over operations of the festival. Downtown Evansville Incorporated is a division of GAGE. GAGE produced the 4th of July fireworks this year, after the Freedom Festival board failed to pay for the 2007 fireworks display. The current festival board announced last week that it is relinquishing control of the festival. That board still has a number of debts from this summer’s event, including $90,000 in prize money owed to the hydroplane teams.

More than $30 million for some western Kentucky families hangs in the balance of a review hearing in Washington, D.C. An attorney for hundreds of Kentucky families argued in federal court Tuesday that government agents bullied them into accepting bad deals in the panic after Pearl Harbor. The land in Union County was bought for construction of Camp Breckenridge.

 

Hopkins County magistrate Jerald Wesley Lynn turned himself in Monday after being accused of sexually abusing two women he was caring for. Authorities say at Regional Medical Center, Lynn, who is a former emergency room employee, inappropriately touched two female patients; one in November, the other in April. One of the victims claimed she was on morphine when the incident occurred. Madisonville Police say the investigation is ongoing.

 

Indiana is still getting fatter - just not as much as some other states. In an annual report by the Trust for America's Health, obesity in Indiana continued to climb as a percentage of adults. But the state once again dropped in its ranking among all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The new report found 27.5% of Hoosier adults are obese, up from 26.8% in last year's report. Indiana's ranking among other states improved from a tie for ninth-worst to a tie for 11th.

The Otters are on the verge of being mathematically eliminated from making the Frontier League Playoffs after Tuesday’s 6-3 loss to the Midwest Sliders at Bosse Field. At the plate, Evansville batters struck out 14 times. The two teams meet again tonight.

 

The good news for St. Louis Tuesday night was Houston beating Milwaukee 5-2. The bad news was the Cardinals ran into a Pirates team in the middle of a winning streak. The streak continued as Pittsburgh won the first of two games at Busch Stadium 4-1. The loss leaves St. Louis 2 and half back of the Brewers in the NL Wild Card chase. The Cards and Bucs meet again tonight.

 

The high school scores from Tuesday: In Volleyball, Harrison fell to Forest Park while Memorial topped Gibson Southern. Soccer action on the boys side had North a 6-1 winner over Mount Vernon, Mater Dei shuts out Vincennes Lincoln 4-0, Boonville is shut out 5-0 by Heritage Hills. In Girls soccer it was Central a winner over Jasper 3-0. Boys Tennis saw Reitz over Mount Vernon 3-2 and North Posey a 4-1 winner against Tell City. In Girls golf Memorial defeats Harrison.

 

Today’s schedule has Central facing North in both boys and girls soccer, Boys tennis sees Central at Mater Dei and Reitz at Tecumseh while Rolling Hills hosts a three-way golf match between Castle, Mater Dei and Boonville.

 

The University of Evansville men’s soccer team retains the Mayor’s Cup and improves their exhibition record to 1-1 after Tuesday’s 3-0 victory over USI. Goals were scored by Bornstein, Robbins, and Luttrull.

 

Tyson Schnitker is the new assistant coach for the USI men’s basketball team. The Robinson, IL native was announced Tuesday as the replacement for Marc Hostetter who stepped down after seven seasons on the Screaming Eagles bench. As player on last year’s USI squad, Tyson averaged 10.1 points and 3.3 assists per game.

 

He has yet to coach a game for Indiana, but Tom Crean has job security. Tuesday the new IU coach signed a 10-year deal worth a minimum $23.6 million dollars. The contract has a base salary of $600,000 with additional payments for promotional work. The deal also includes incentive bonuses for Big Ten championships, final four appearances and national championships.

 

The Evansville Icemen announced the addition of Shane Hemingway as the team’s strength and conditioning coach. Hemingway, who began playing the sport with Evansville Youth Hockey, is a former Marine, holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education, and is a certified Personal Trainer.
